“Understanding Bump Thrust in Aviation: Enhancing Performance at a Cost

by AviationHub11 | Feb 15, 2024 | Aviation Inside

What is Bump Thrust In Aviation

It is a feature Given by Aircraft manufacturers in the Aircraft that allows them to add Extra power to engines for the short term to Increase Operational performance.

It is used by pilots during heavy takeoff when they need a boost of power to get airborne when the winds are thin or a hot weather when aircraft need more power than normal process.

Boeing 777-200 LR is one of the first aircraft to have these features.

But this feature will increase the cost of operations for airlines in the following ways

  1. More fuel requirement

As Fuel costs contribute the biggest share of operational cost then they can contribute more than 50 percent of total operational cost and using additional power will result in more fuel, which means more cost for the airlines.

2. Increase in engine Maintenance

Using extra power or making the engine work harder will also cause wear and tear that requires more frequent maintenance checks and also decrease the life of the engines.

This is to be used when required only otherwise can cost too much on airline cost.
